This is where EMI filters play a fundamental role.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6651\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6651\" style=\"width: 984px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6651 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/apaprecchiature-Medicali-filtri.png\" alt=\"Filtri EMI Medicali\" width=\"984\" height=\"380\" \/\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/apaprecchiature-Medicali-filtri.png 984w, https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/apaprecchiature-Medicali-filtri-300x116.png 300w, https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/apaprecchiature-Medicali-filtri-768x297.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 984px) 100vw, 984px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Electromedical equipment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It is precisely in this context of technological reliability that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astrodynetdi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASTRODYNE TDI<\/a> positions itself, along with its range of specific products, designed to maximize the <strong>performance<\/strong> required by medical device designers in full compliance with current regulations and to make the work of healthcare workers <strong>reliable and safe<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIn particular, when developing medical electronic equipment, designers must consider all the possible sources of interference and ensure correct operation, such as leakage current, EMC issues and &#8220;<strong>operational continuity<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>In this article we will illustrate specifically how to solve EMC issues and which solutions are most suitable.<\/p>\n<h5>The problem of EMC disturbances in medical applications<\/h5>\n<p>Nowadays, all electrical and electronic devices use active circuits with a <strong>high switching frequency<\/strong> that create unwanted high-frequency signals and <strong>noise<\/strong>, generating <strong>Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI)<\/strong> towards nearby devices. The EMI generated can reduce the operability of other equipment, causing it to malfunction.<br \/>\n<strong>EMI FILTERS reduce noise<\/strong> and prevent interference with other devices. This makes EMI filters <strong>crucial<\/strong> for the correct operation of every product, especially in the electromedical sector.<\/p>\n<h6>Challenges in the use of EMI filters in medical applications<\/h6>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6652\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6652\" style=\"width: 417px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6652\" src=\"https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Defibrillatori-medicali.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"417\" height=\"318\" \/\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Defibrillatori-medicali.jpg 635w, https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Defibrillatori-medicali-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6652\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Electrocardiograph, a medical instrument for electrocardiograms, uses EMI filters.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Life-support devices (e.g. defibrillators, ventilators, heart\/lung machines\u2026) operate in close proximity to the p<\/p>\n<p>atient, are placed at minimal distances, and it is essential that they operate <strong>uninterruptedly<\/strong>. If a medical device were to stop working, the consequences for the patient would in fact be lethal. Furthermore, life-support equipment is often highly susceptible to interference; defibrillators and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are among the largest generators of electromagnetic interference but are also extremely sensitive to external disturbances.<\/p>\n<p>It is no coincidence that global <strong>standards such as IEC 60601-1, UL 60601-1<\/strong> and <strong>CISPR 11<\/strong> reduce issues related to electromagnetic interference, setting guidelines and technical conditions so that products do not pose any danger to patient health.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Using properly designed EMI FILTERS minimizes medical device malfunction and reduces potential risks to patients.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><strong><u>Specific requirements of EMI filters for medical applications<\/u><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>To meet regulatory requirements, equipment must be able to attenuate noise signals while maintaining <strong>low leakage current<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6653\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6653\" style=\"width: 417px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6653\" src=\"https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Leakage-current.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"417\" height=\"268\" \/\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Leakage-current.png 855w, https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Leakage-current-300x193.png 300w, https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Leakage-current-768x494.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graphic example of leakage current<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Leakage current, very common in electrical and electronic devices, usually flows to ground through the ground conductor. Some leakage current passes through the metal structure of the devices, creating an electrical charge (touch current). Electromedical devices are very often connected to patients, and some of these connections are electrically conductive and create a potential path for leakage current to reach the patient&#8217;s body (patient leakage).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A high leakage current flowing into the human body can create an electric shock.<\/strong> If the medical device is connected to the patient intravenously or through the heart, this current can induce ventricular fibrillation, potentially fatal. This is due to high patient leakage current or the inadvertent passage of ground\/touch current through the patient, perhaps due to errors, contact, breakage or improper grounding connection. All of this can create short- and long-term health problems for the patient.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><strong><u>IEC 60601-1 Standard<\/u><\/strong><\/h6>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6654\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6654\" style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6654\" src=\"https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Filtri-EMI-e-normativa.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"200\" \/\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Filtri-EMI-e-normativa.png 545w, https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Filtri-EMI-e-normativa-285x300.png 285w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6654\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EMI filters and regulations<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has standardized the IEC 60601 standard. <strong>Medical devices must comply with these regulatory requirements<\/strong> before being placed on the market. The standard provides for tests on emissions (CISPR 11), immunity and safety. In summary, the standard requires that the emissions generated by devices do not endanger human life or other devices.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>EMI filters<\/u><\/strong><u> do not need to comply with IEC 60601 requirements, but they <strong>allow the medical device to comply with emission requirements<\/strong>,<\/u> keeping disturbances within the limits imposed by CISPR 11.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><strong><u>Y Capacitors between Phase and Ground<\/u><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>As indicated above, <strong>leakage current<\/strong> is the <strong>critical safety parameter<\/strong> in medical applications. Leakage current is created through the Y capacitors connected between Phase and Ground (direct current) and by various insulation and dielectrics in the device (stray current). Y capacitors between Phase and Ground are a fundamental component for every type of filter: the greater the capacitance, the better the filtering response, however resulting in higher leakage current.<\/p>\n<p>All of this creates a <strong>unique challenge for medical EMI filter designers<\/strong>. <u>If the capacitance value of the Y capacitors is reduced to comply with regulatory requirements, the filter&#8217;s performance is reduced accordingly and in many cases this could lead to the final device failing emission tests.<\/u><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6655\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6655\" style=\"width: 582px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6655\" src=\"https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Ottimizzazione-valore-dei-condensatori.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"582\" height=\"457\" \/\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Ottimizzazione-valore-dei-condensatori.png 582w, https:\/\/redesign.consystem.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Ottimizzazione-valore-dei-condensatori-300x236.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 582px) 100vw, 582px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Difference between a standard filter and a medical filter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To solve this problem, it is necessary to optimize the value of the Y capacitors, also working on other components to customize the design.
