EC fans ideal for heat pumps using A2L and A3 refrigerants

The adoption of new-generation heat pumps using refrigerants with low global warming potential (GWP) – such as R290 (Propane) – has set a new standard for the development of sustainable and eco-friendly heating systems. Delta’s EC fans are a cornerstone of these new heat pumps, which aim to achieve genuine “green” technology, in line with the EU’s sustainability goals.

Although heat pumps using natural refrigerants have reached a mature stage and are considered a safe technology, they present unique challenges due to their high flammability. For this reason, manufacturers of heat pumps using flammable refrigerants must adhere to strict considerations regarding the system’s design, safety, installation, and operation.

EC fans for gas extraction in heat pumps

Delta’s EC axial fans, for residential and industrial applications, measure from 120mm to 800mm and are designed to meet the strict requirements of these applications. They are compliant with safety standards for A2L and A3 refrigerants and are characterized by very low energy consumption, a high-efficiency motor >90%, and a state-of-the-art blade design that ensures maximum airflow and minimum noise levels, while also excelling in terms of performance and reliability.

In industrial applications, the heat pump often includes a second level of ventilation (secondary fans) for gas extraction in the event of leaks. Delta also offers a complete range of ATEX-certified EC fans specific to “gas extraction”. In fact, for systems with a high quantity of flammable refrigerant, F-gas regulations require frequent leak checks. The secondary fan is activated when the system detects a refrigerant level above the threshold and, due to direct contact with the refrigerant, must necessarily be ATEX certified, for safe operation in potentially hazardous environments.
