Delta: EC fans for heat pumps

Ventole EC per pompe di calore di nuova generazione

Delta’s EC fans for the safety and efficiency of heat pumps with next-generation refrigerants

The adoption of next-generation heat pumps that use low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants – such as R290 (Propane) – has set a new standard for the development of sustainable, environmentally friendly heating systems. Delta’s EC fans, from Delta, are a cornerstone of these new heat pumps, which aim to deliver truly “green” technology, in line with the EU’s sustainability goals.

Refrigerants play a key role in the transition toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions, replacing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) with a high “global warming potential” with low-GWP natural alternatives such as Propane and CO2, in line with the EU’s F-gas regulation and the Paris Agreement.

Although heat pumps using natural refrigerants have reached a mature stage and are considered a safe technology, they present unique challenges due to their high flammability. Manufacturers of heat pumps using flammable refrigerants must comply with strict regulations regarding system design, safety, installation and operation.

EC fans for gas extraction

Delta’s fans are safe and specifically designed for primary and secondary ventilation applications within heat pump modules. Delta’s axial EC fans, for residential and industrial applications, range in size from 120mm to 800mm and are designed to meet the strict requirements of these applications. Most Delta EC fans are compliant with the A2L and A3 refrigerant safety standards, have very low energy consumption, a highly energy-efficient motor >90% and a cutting-edge blade design that ensures maximum airflow and minimal noise levels, while excelling in both performance and reliability.

In industrial applications, the heat pump often includes a second level of ventilation (secondary fans) for gas extraction in the event of leaks. Delta offers a complete range of ATEX-certified EC fans specifically designed for “gas extraction.” In fact, for systems with a high quantity of flammable refrigerant, the F-gas regulation requires frequent leak checks; a leak detection system is therefore often included. The secondary fan is activated when this system detects a refrigerant level above the threshold. Due to direct contact with the refrigerant, this fan must necessarily be ATEX certified, for safe operation in potentially hazardous environments.
