What are DIN rail power supplies?

In the world of electronics it is very common, especially in the industrial field, to hear about DIN Rail or DIN Rail-mounted devices – a family that also includes DIN rail power supplies, the subject of this article.

Why are these devices, including power supplies, relays, switches, PLCs and others, classified in this way? The answer is very simple: because they are devices that mount onto a metal guide-rail normally placed inside electrical panels or enclosures.

The DIN rail has a history spanning more than a century, but it was only in 1950 that it was developed into the current standards by the German institution Deutsches Institut für Normung, precisely DIN.

There are three main types of DIN rails (in turn divided into subtypes with different dimensions):

  • the most widely used is the one called Omega (also known as “hat-shaped” or type O);
  • then there is the C-section rail;
  • and the G-section one (the name is linked to the “shape” of the rail itself).

The DIN rail can be perforated, pre-drilled or completely sealed. Several devices are mounted on a DIN rail, which are connected to each other by special terminal blocks, creating modular circuit blocks.

 

Advantages of DIN rails

The advantages of DIN rails are considerable: first of all, design is simple, as is wiring. Furthermore, installing or removing devices is easy and quick. DIN rails help save space, with the possibility of having fewer devices that are also, above all, more compact.
Another advantage of DIN rails not to be underestimated is the interchangeability of devices: thanks to the standardization of DIN dimensions, products from different manufacturers and brands can easily be used in the same system.

Indeed, numerous types of DIN rail power supplies are available: 5Vdc, 12Vdc, 24Vdc (24Vdc DIN power supply) and 48Vdc for various output power ranges (Output Power) ranging from 7.5W up to 960W (with many different fractional steps). The output current (Output Current) ranges from 0.83A up to 40A.
