The DC Fast Charger market
Despite the market’s steady growth, Europe and Italy show a significant shortage of fast-charging points (DC fast chargers). In particular, MOTUS-E points out that in Italy only 6% of charging points are direct current – i.e. fast charging. Under the PNRR, €750 million will be invested in charging points classified as “Fast” (≥ 50 < 100 kW), “SuperFast 1” (≥ 100 < 200 kW) and “Super-Fast 2” (≥ 200 kW). Specifically, plans call for 7,500 fast-charging points on motorways, 13,755 in urban centers and 100 experimental charging stations powered by energy storage technologies. In this scenario, the electronic components sector is seeing growing demand for technologies that meet the needs of the fast-charging station market. In fast and superfast charging stations, a crucial element that often gets “little visibility” is the EMI filter. Both on the input and output side.
The importance of EMI filters
The three-phase input for DC fast chargers requires multiple power conversion stages. This can introduce considerable electromagnetic interference in the systems, making compliance with emission regulations (conducted and radiated) complex. On the output side too, electromagnetic interference can lead (especially with very high voltages) to compliance issues for the whole system and force very costly redesigns (in terms of both money and time).
In this regard, there is growing demand for EMI filters that can guarantee the correct operation, safety and compliance of (superfast) charging stations.

The RP695 series: Astrodyne’s new solution for EV chargers (including superfast/fast charging)
Astrodyne TDI’s RP695 series is a range of high-current, two-stage EMI/EMC filters operating up to 1500 V DC. The RP695 filters are currently offered with rated currents of 450 A, 600 A, 1000 A and 1600 A and selectable Y capacitor values from 0 to 2000 nF (customizable on request). The series also has a Line-to-Ground insulation rating of 6000 Vdc.
The RP695 series is also notable for its compact dimensions: from 122 x 260 x 128 mm up to 140 x 316 x 130 mm. Thanks to these features, this range of EMI filters can simplify design-in and be easily installed where space is critical (e.g. charging stations), while still guaranteeing full system compliance, safety and effectiveness.
Besides ev-charging, this solution can be used in photovoltaic systems, industrial inverters and many other applications, also thanks to a wide operating temperature range (from -25°C up to +50°C).
