DC/DC converter for railway and industrial applications

DC/DC Converter for railway and industrial applications

Power supply for the railway and industrial field by Vox power

In the industrial and railway landscape, where high vibrations and harsh environmental conditions are the norm, the use of electronic components able to withstand these challenges becomes crucial. These components ensure the correct operation of systems under any condition, extending their service life.

VCCR300: The ideal power supply solution for industry and railway

The VCCR300, a DC/DC converter manufactured by the Irish company Vox Power, is designed to meet exactly these needs. Compliant with MIL-STD-810G standards for shock and vibration, the VCCR300 is ideal for industrial and railway applications.

Features Benefits
Ultra compact design Flexibility, ease of integration, space saving
Fanless and conduction cooled Greater reliability, quietness
Scalability Higher power with even load sharing among devices
Wide operating temperature range and conformal coating Suitable for use in complex environments subject to demanding conditions
Robustness, lightness and efficiency Reduction and stabilization of the service voltage (e.g. on means of transport of growing interest)
The DC/DC Converter for the industrial field

The device complies with all the latest industrial safety standards (IEC/UL62368-1 3RD Edition), and both EMC emissions and immunity comply with the requirements of the EN50121-3-2, EN55035 and EN55032 class B standards essential for the Industrial field.
The new material handling needs, including for heavy loads, increasingly call for battery-powered pallet truck solutions, with wireless charging and autonomous guidance without the need for an operator. In these vehicles, the position sensors, lcontrol electronics and drive management require a low, stabilized service voltage of 24V that must be generated directly from the main battery bank, which very often has a voltage at least double and variable depending on the state of charge.
The same concept should also be considered with reference to the use of propeller drones for certain types of transport with particular characteristics or in specific conditions.

In some situations, such as transporting materials to elevated locations such as mountain refuges or isolated installations, ground access can be complicated, especially for heavy or bulky loads, which can lead to significant costs. Furthermore, in emergency situations where rapid intervention is needed and locations are difficult to access, efficiency is essential. The use of battery-powered drones allows material to be delivered quickly to the required point, while specialized personnel can reach the site more easily and quickly by land.
The VCCR300, with its robustness and efficiency, as well as its lightness, fully performs the required task of reducing and stabilizing the service voltage for drones and other means of transport.

VCCR300 - Vox Power

DC/DC converter for railway environments

With reference to the Railway sector, Vox Power’s DC/DC converters offer a wide range of DC input voltages, meeting the standard requirements of 48V, 72V, 96V and 110V batteries, with the related overvoltage and undervoltage limits prescribed by the EN50155 standard.

They guarantee a holdup time compliant with EN50155 Class S2 (>10mS) for 300W and Class S3 (>20ms) for 180W. In addition, the insulation complies with the EN45545 standard, meeting the European standard for fire protection and limitation of potential toxic gas production on railway vehicles.

Specifically, the VCCR300 is particularly suitable for railway systems undergoing upgrades, in which – that is – innovative features are integrated (e.g. new Wi-Fi connection standards) and more modern and reliable train control and safety systems against possible hacker attacks or railway traffic management and monitoring.

The VCCR300 is a DC/DC converter delivering up to 300W of power. It also offers the possibility of connecting multiple units in parallel to achieve higher power levels (600W, 900W), sharing the load evenly across each device.

Its absence of fans (fanless) and conduction cooling allow a high level of quietness, together with high reliability. This latter is demonstrated by an MTBF of 2 million hours, thanks to the choice of latest-generation components and manufacturing processes. In addition, the conformal coating treatment as a standard feature makes the converter immune to contamination and potential failures caused by conductive dust.

The ultra compact design of these DC/DC converters makes them flexible and easy to integrate into any system, while also ensuring significant space savings. Being a “ready-to-use” product certified according to industry standards makes it particularly attractive in system upgrade contexts, as it can be installed via simple screw terminal connections and mechanical fastening to a heat sink panel

The high-efficiency design (up to 94%) minimizes heat emission, allowing a wide operating temperature range from -40°C to +70°C (+85°C for 10 minutes) with minimal cooling requirements.

The input voltage range is wide, from 33.6VDC to 160 VDC; the available output voltages are 12V, 24V, 36V and 48V, characterized by a wide adjustment range between 90% and 125%. The VCCR300 is also equipped with overvoltage, overcurrent and overtemperature protections.

The VCCR300 is distributed in Italy by CONSYSTEM which, thanks to its solid partnership with the supplier and its technical specialists in the Power field, offers the customer technical support and assistance at every stage of the commercial cycle, from design-in to after-sales.
