IMD-3101: the new 24 GHz motion detection RADAR sensor for Light Control, Industrial and Perimeter Security applications
InnoSenT – a German company leader in RADAR technology – has launched a new motion detection sensor: the IMD-3101 (IMD stands for InnoSenT Motion Detection).
The distinctive feature of this RADAR sensor is its narrow opening angle (15° in azimuth and 114° in elevation), which sets it apart from other motion sensors (typically wide-range / wide-angle). Furthermore, the IMD-3101 can be used as a plug-and-play system in just a few steps and is ready for immediate use.
Indeed, the radar system includes digital signal processing – thanks to an intelligent μC pre-processing unit. This information (Target List) is communicated via UART. In addition, the IMD-3101 allows the setting of various specific triggers or monitoring functions (for example lighting systems and/or warehouse automation).
With the IMD-3101, InnoSenT thus offers a ready-to-use system that can be easily integrated into the final application in just a few steps.

Technical features of the IMD-3101 RADAR sensor
The IMD-3101 is a 24 GHz FSK radar that detects the speed, direction of movement and distance of moving people and other objects (such as forklifts). The system’s maximum range is 80 m and it detects people up to 60 m away. This RADAR sensor detects movement between 0.23 and 28.8 km/h precisely and reliably. The fast update rate of 100 ms ensures that no detection event goes unnoticed.
The system requires a supply voltage between 3.8 and 7.2 V to operate.
Radar sensor applications
InnoSenT developed the product for various automation applications that benefit from the special design of the radar beam.
Indeed, in addition to automated corridor lighting control in industrial settings, another typical application is monitoring areas along a building (Security field). As soon as the IMD-3101 detects movement, it emits a signal to control lighting or trigger an alarm.
This 24GHz radar is also very rugged and works flawlessly even in “harsh” / “outdoor” environments and complex conditions, such as darkness, heat and cold, or dirty and dusty spaces.
Furthermore, thanks to its compact dimensions (20x70x12.2mm), it is easy to install, making this product usable in various fields: Industrial, Security (including outdoor) and Smart Building.
Filters, monitoring of specific areas and ease of programming
Some automation processes require a focus on a limited area: sensors must detect movements in a particular/exclusive area and only when a specific event occurs within that area.
Furthermore, false alarms due to movements in adjacent areas and/or interference from other nearby sensors must not occur.
InnoSenT has solved this challenge thanks to an intelligent antenna design and state-of-the-art signal processing in the IMD-3101, while also ensuring that it can be easily programmed.
The sensor can be programmed so that activation occurs after a certain period of time or after an event/trigger occurs with a certain frequency. In this way, activation only occurs when the device detects the movement of an object for several measurement cycles. Users can also set two different filters to further tailor detection to their needs. The trigger signal transmission can be filtered based on measured values of speed, distance, signal power and direction of movement.
Furthermore, individual programming and adjustment can easily be carried out via API (the product has an open collector output for direct transmission of the trigger signal) or thanks to the GUI (included).
Where to find it
The IMD-3101 is distributed in Italy by CONSYSTEM S.r.l., which, thanks to its twenty-year partnership with InnoSenT and the technical expertise of its specialists, is able to support customers from choosing the right RADAR through to design-in and after-sales support.
